The land on which Cedar Knoll now stands was acquired in 1654 by a prominent aristocrat and his wife, a princess of the Piscataway tribe, for their one-year old son, Giles Brent, Jr. and named Piscataway Neck. The son, who was most famous for his involvement in Bacon's Rebellion which ended in the burning of Jamestown, eventually moved to England where he died, passing the land on to relatives. In 1760, it was purchased by George Washington, becoming River Farm, the northernmost of the five farms that made up Washington's 18 th century estate.

During his lifetime, Washington leased out River Farm to his personal secretary and nephew-in-law, Tobias Lear. The land was further divided by subsequent generations and the hearth of what is now Cedar Knoll was constructed in the early 1800s as a farm house on a plantation named Markland on the Potomac. The building was later remodeled by Pauline Walsh and opened to the public as the Mount Vernon View Antique Shop.

Since 1941, the building operated as an inn and restaurant. In the Fall of 2015, after a brief hiatus, and a new lease under the auspices of a close-knit group of daring culinary artists, Cedar Knoll re-opened as one of the most exciting new restaurants in the Washington Metro.

History of the Estate

Open 365 days of the year, Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America. Over 85 million people have visited Mount Vernon since 1860, when the estate officially opened to the public. Today, Mount Vernon welcomes an average of one million guests each year.

The estate, gardens, and farm of Mount Vernon totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. Presently, an estimated 500 acres of this historic property have been painstakingly preserved along the banks of the Potomac River.

Guests visiting the estate can view WashingtonÆs Mansion and many other original structures. The historic footprint also includes the tomb of George and Martha Washington and a memorial dedicated to the enslaved people who lived and worked on the estate. Interpretive spaces such as the Pioneer Farm and George Washington's Gristmill & Distillery provide a rich understanding of Washington's enterprising and profitable business ventures.

Offering additional engaging experiences, the Ford Orientation Center and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center include 25 theaters and galleries showcasing Mount Vernon's superb collections. The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon is a groundbreaking center for scholarship and educational outreach on the life of George Washington and the colonial and founding eras.

Mount Vernon does not accept grants from federal, state, or local governments, and no tax dollars are expended to support its purposes. Primary sources of i

Gum Springs was founded by the patriarchical Freedman, West Ford, whose bones rest near George Washington's at Mount Vernon. It was named after a gum tree that once marked the marshy land, highly prized for farming in the past. Quietly nestled across the river on George Washington's side of the Potomac, Gum Springs was a place for blacks to prevail, assimilating runaways and freed slaves who migrated there by way of the nearby port of Alexandria. Many of its forbearers tended General Washington's estate at Mount Vernon before they were freed at the death of his wife, Martha. Freed slaves found assistance from Quakers in their struggle for economic survival. The skills and trades they learned as estate slaves added to their growth towards independence. Today, Gum Springs has more than 2,500 residents and as many as 500 are descendants of the original families.

Mount Vernon Country Club is a family friendly, member owned club set on beautiful woodlands that were once George Washington's estate. Offering an 18 hole championship golf course, swimming pool, and a clubhouse that features both casual and formal dining venues. The course winds its way through the original forest of George Washington's plantation and is enhanced by the Dogue Creek, a Potomac/Chesapeake tidal tributary which lends a water hazard challenge on 14 of the 18 holes.

MVCC is proud to be an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary which enables us to protect precious natural areas and wildlife habitats. The Club has extensive practice facilities which include a Driving Range, Putting Green, Warm up Chipping Green and a Short Game area.

Mount Vernon also prides itself on its Junior Golf program and offers two sets of ''Family Tees''.

The Executive Chef and his team create delicious meals and exciting events all year round for members and their guests.

A 25-meter competition-quality swimming pool, along with a wading pool for children is staffed Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Grill outside features cooked to order hot and cold sandwiches, salads, snacks, and favorite beverages.
